PLANNING DECISION - JUNE 10TH

We are delighted to share the news that the Development Control Committee has voted unanimously to support the Planning Officer's recommendation for refusal.

Nailsworth Environmental Appeal

A planning application has been submitted to Stroud District Council for the development of 13 high-density flats along a stretch of riverbank nestled between Egypt Mill, Trade Plas, Nailsworth River and Dunkirk Mills Pond Environmental Project. The application requires the demolition of ‘Cheldon’ and ‘The Meadow’ - both attractive and suitable single dwellings - to be replaced wth one 4-storey apartment block and a second 2-storey.

These high density dwellings will be serviced by a new road, and a large-scale heavy duty bridge across Nailsworth River. Access will be via Station Road, part of the National Cycle Route 45. A building project of this scale and magnitude creates a whole host of environmental, ecological and road safety concerns for the Nailsworth residents.

3 reasons why we must stop the development:

Photos
  1. The majority of this site is within a local flood plain (according to Local and Environmental Agency Plans) which could effect Nailsworth Town and the Dunkirk Mills Ponds Projects.

  2. The site is within a Key Wildlife Area harbouring Water vole, reptiles (snakes and slow worms), white-clawed crayfish, pipistrelle bats, 47 species of birds including kingfisher, grey wagtails, dippers, songthrush and spotted flycatchers… This development will seriously effect the ecological balance along this fragile nature corridor, specifically because the proposal requires:
    • The felling of almost 50 trees
    • A wide-span bridge to cross this river requiring heavy engineering work and a new retaining wall alongside the river.

  3. The site abuts a national cycle route. Station Road has alrady seen an increase in traffic and congestion, which will only increase further with the proposed Railway Hotel and Goldwater Springs apartment developments. This additional development for 13 flats (each with provision for two cars) crossing a key part of the cycle route can only be described as dangerous for the families who regularly use it.
